Write to your MP - it's time to end greyhound racing

Writing to your local MP is the one of the most effective ways to put our mission to end greyhound cruelty firmly on the political agenda.

Please take the time to make your voice heard, and help us encourage policy makers to enact greater protections for the dogs, and ensure all those who profit from racing, contribute fairly to greyhound protection.

Tell your member of parliament that you want to end greyhound cruelty.

<p id="salutation" class="mceNonEditable">Dear MP,</p>
<p>Every day in the UK, two greyhounds die due to greyhound racing. Last year, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB) recorded 3,575 injuries at its member tracks. This does not include injuries recorded at the four independent tracks in the UK, or account for the maltreatment and death of racing greyhounds at the hands of breeders and owners who prioritise profit over welfare. The GBGB has reneged on a pledge in its 2018 commitment statement, to halve the number of dogs killed within the industry by 2021, pushing this back to 2023, while simultaneously investing in extensive and expensive public relations campaigns.</p>
<p>The voluntary levy paid by bookmakers is calculated as 0.6% of the profits generated through the betting on dogs in the UK. The board of the British Greyhound Racing Fund, collects the levies and determines how the money is spent. In 2015 the BGRF awarded more than £1.1 million in track grants, while the Retired Greyhound Trust received £1.4 million – sufficient money to home 1,237 greyhounds at the current RGT’s average homing costs of £1,131 per dog. Thus, funding awarded by the BGRF is only sufficient to home a fraction of the greyhounds exiting the industry.</p>
<p>The End Greyhound Cruelty campaign aims to end the suffering of these gentle animals, by holding the GBGB to account, raising awareness, and putting this issue on the political agenda.</p>
<p>If global trends are anything to go by, the end of greyhound racing is inevitable. As your constituent, I ask that you advocate for a phase out and immediately improve the lives of greyhounds by:</p>

<li>Implementing a 5% statutory levy to be paid by bookmakers profiting from dog racing.</li>
<li>Helping to put an end to the self-regulation of the GBGB.</li>
<li>Implementing full life tracking for all greyhounds racing in the UK.</li>
<li>Prohibiting the construction of new tracks and re-licencing of old tracks in the UK.</li>
